Euroregion "Pro Europa Viadrina"Euroregion "Pro Europa Viadrina" is situated right within the dynamic East-to-West trade and traffic corridor Rotterdam-Berlin-Warsaw-Moscow. The cities of Frankfurt-on-Oder, Ei-senhuettenstadt, Gorzow and Slubice are centres of econo-mic activity. To the West Euro-region borders with Berlin and it offers direct access to the markets of Central and Eastern Europe, highly-educated labour, developed estates for manufacturing and industrial production.The region´s economic structure shows a variety of sectors with small and medium enterprises. Major places of industrial production are cities like Eisenhuettenstadt (steel), Rue-dersdorf (building material), Gorzow (chemical and textile industry, car parts) and Kostrzyn (paper). One of the sectors in this region developing most dynamically is trade. Frankfurt-on-Oder and Gorzow are in possession of fairgrounds which are of importance for the whole region. The total length of the German-Polish border is 461 kilometers. The border section running through Euroregion "Pro Europa Viadrina" is 135 kilometres long. The total number of border checkpoints within Euroregion is six: four road and two railway connections that cross the border. About 50 per cent of the entire commodity transfer between Germany and Poland is funneled through the Frankfurt-on-Oder - Świecko border checkpoint. Establishing of Collegium Polonicum ,the joint research institution of both partner universities: the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań and European University Viadrina of Frankfurt (O), is also a symbol of unifying Europe. The Collegium Polonicum focuses primarily on scientific and cultural cooperation between Poland and Germany. Wide areas covered by waters and forests which are embedded in a charming landscape, combined with sights that enjoy a reputation beyond the region have made Euroregion "Pro Europa Viadrina" an attractive travelling destination. Holiday-making in Euroregion can be characterized by cultural activities as well as by relaxation in the countryside. The East Brandenburgish Triangle of Lakeside Resorts Bad Freienwalde, Buckow, Bad Saarow are comple-mented on the Polish side by impressive natural resorts (the Słońsk bird resort, the Nietoperek bat reservation near Międzyrzecz). One on the famous attraction in this area is Międzyrzecz Fortification Region - a large on- and under-the-ground german fortifications passage. There is a major potential for Euroregion´s development in the extension of a comprehensive net of bicycle paths as well as of water resort tourism. There is a great number of cultural activities on either side of the fron-tier, many of which are crossborder. Local municipalities, schools and clubs organize dozens of sport and festive events, concerts and other get-togethers every year. The German part of Euroregion "Pro Europa Viadrina" has been a region eligible to subsidies within the framework of the INTERREG II subsidizing pogramme and the Polish part of Euroregion has received subsidies from PHARE CBC (Cross Border Cooperation). From 1995 to 2000 were subsidised over 800 small projects. |
